Photography on campus

November 29th, 2008

This week the kids were home from school, so we walked up the hill to the KU Natural History Museum.

Dan Coburn has several photographs in the museum’s art exhibition “Biodiversity is…”.  There was also additional work from a variety of artists.

“To say of a picture, as is often said in its praise, that it shows great and earnest labour, is to say that it is incomplete and unfit for view.” -James McNeill Whistler

Tip of the day

What is wrong with looking at the LCD? (asked on a web photo forum after several negative remarks about chimping)

Nothing. Use the techniques, features, and tools that work best for you. What works for one photographer may not be the best way for the next.

The vast majority of the world will judge your photographs purely on their finished appearance, but photo geeks sometimes come up with little contests; usually oriented around the way they like to work. The rules of these contests vary, but common ones are: no chimping, limited to 36 shots, highest lens price tag wins, dials must be fiddled with fingers, biggest print wins, most resolution wins, oldest process wins, newest gear wins, etc… Make up your own photography contest rules! Everybody else is. But don’t let the little contests get in the way of creating good photos.

Digital Black and White Photography Link

I recently found BlackAndWhiteDigital.com .  They’ve gathered a lot of good info about digital BW processing.  Highly recommended!
